There will be many "firsts" in the next 365 days. We finally reached my second favorite holiday, HALLOWEEN! Sadly, he's too young to really enjoy the costumes and the candy (we kept that for ourselves to enjoy!), but I and those involved in his life enjoyed the making of new memories with him. One huge benchmark revolving around this fun holiday was the fact that he got to meet his Great-Grandmother for the first time. It was super special, especially since there was a time not that long ago, that the thought of my grandmother living long enough to see my children enter this world was just a wishful dream. Thanks be to God, her health has stabilized over the past few years, and she has been able to live this moment.
My mom brought up grandma with her the weekend before Halloween so we could all go to a fun event at our local zoo called "Boo at the Zoo", where the place is decorated and special activities are held to celebrate Halloween. Alekos didn't have a costume so I improvised with a Thanksgiving outfit I had bought him, but I knew was not going to fit him in time for Gobble Gobble Day. I slipped him into the turkey outfit and we went to the zoo as a family.
We had our trick-or-treat bag that they gave us at the door, which had a fun scavenger hunt with riddles that were related to different "spooky" animals around the zoo. There was also a costume contest being held in one area, and different candy and toy spots scattered around the property for the young trick-or-treaters. We explored the different exhibits and took pictures with the cool animals. Eventually, we found our way to the costume contest and we decided to take a break there and enjoy the different costumes signing up for the competition. They had three different categories: Animals, Scariest, and Most Original. Having a baby turkey with us, we decided to sign up Alekos just for fun, because why not.
The DJ played awesome Halloween-themed music including mom's favorite "Ghostbusters". She danced with a sleeping baby turkey against her chest and we laughed. Then the announcement was made that the winners were going to be selected. We settle back to watch the winners, but then the most insane thing happened: Alekos won the animal category! "Baby Turkey!" Oh my god! We won?! How?! My mom rushed in with Alekos and collected his ribbon and prize bag of small toys (which are totally a choking hazard and we will keep somewhere safe for him to enjoy when he's older).
It was clear to say that we were all in disbelief and on a giggling spree as we finished the rest of our trip at the zoo. Once we got home, we struggled to squeeze him out of the turkey outfit, and fearing that we might hurt him in the process, we agreed to carefully use some scissors to cut him free of his adorable prison. Alas, he at least got to wear it! Maybe next year we can do the traditional trick or treating through the neighborhood with him. For now, enjoy his different outfits from his homemade photoshoot! Up next; Christmas!
