I moved! A new home, and a new start. Unpacking and finding a place for all my things felt like a good point to press the reboot button. I threw out a lot of things before I even started packing my room in our previous apartment. Consider it a detox for my material collection. Books alone, I gave away close to 70 books to friends, family, and even some of my students. I must admit, that was difficult, but I made sure to give them new homes with people I knew would take care of them the way I did. Then there were the trinkets, the small things you don't even realize you collect over the years until you step on it in the dark and wonder why you even have so many useless things. These I threw out without hesitation.
I had three rules:
1. Have I used it more than 10 times in the last 6 months?
2. Does it have the potential to be given away instead of throw out?
3. Will I be willing to take this object with me if I were to move to Europe?
Due to the last one, I threw out most "things". Items such as clothes, if it didn't qualify against Rule #1 and it was in good condition, I donated it. If it was old, stained, or worn, into the garbage it went. To say I threw out bags of garbage is an understatement. A cleansing was in total effect. During this, I also learned that I had a bad habit of bringing work home. Shredding was a nightmare.
But now with a new canvas for a bedroom, I can start over. I want to declutter my life, and I can start by keeping my room with the minimal clutter. Mom has always believed that if your living space was a mess, your mind was a mess too.
The cool thing is that my new room already has a cork board on the wall, which means when I hang my old one up, I'll have two vision boards! I can keep the travel one as is, and then make the other one focus on my physical health goals. 2019-2020 will be big goals for myself, aiming to reach a healthier benchmark than where I stand currently. I also chose a light purple for my bedroom walls; the color is soft and warm, which I thought would add a calming effect to my personal space.
I want to invest on buying myself a desk since most studies agree on productivity being at its peak when sitting up straight while working on a flat surface (unlike my preference of working on the couch with my back hunched over and laptop on my lap). Yep...I have a ton of boxes to unpack, but I can already taste it. This will be a good starting point for my Life Reboot. Wish me luck! #Challenges #Journal
