Percy Jackson: Movie to Book

So yes, the book review has been done, but what about the movie? Yes there were some...changes now that I read the book, but honestly I'm not too upset about any of them. Well maybe two of them.

I will attempt to not give out too much information incase you haven't seen the film yet, so forgive me for being a little vague. In the movie, their journey was very specific...they had set locations to travel to in search of pearls that would help them escape the Underworld once they got there. In the book, the pearls were a gift right before entering the Underworld, while they still traveled to those same or similar locations, but they occurred naturally, by chance. By changing the purpose of the destinations, it made the movie more goal oriented I guess. Personally I would like to see the unpredictable moments that occur in the book that were left out.

The second major change that stuck out is that we discover who the traitor is way before you should in the movie. I would have enjoyed finding out in the very last second like you do in the book. That effect is very powerful in making me want to learn more and be loyal to follow up with the next installment.

Not all changes were bad though; I guess now that I’m thinking about it, making him a teenager in high school was a small change that made it better, since I guess that’s a little more believable than a 12 year old traveling across the country without a parent.

One major inaccuracy however made by the movie that I’m surprised to see, was the inclusion of the character of Persephone when Percy and his team arrive in the Underworld. Summer solstice… SUMMER. Persephone shouldn’t be in the Underworld, she is supposed to be in the surface world. In the book they point it out since that’s the way her contract works. On the subject of Persephone; the pearls that they are collecting in the movie are said to belong to Persephone as a method of her “lovers” to enter and leave the Underworld, suggesting she cheats on Hades. I guess they made this change to add up the adjustments they did by making the pearls the destination instead of a gift from Poseidon. It just complicates things a little in my opinion.

Other than this, I enjoyed the rest of the movie. It was fun and entertaining, and the second one was just a fun to watch. There were countless of other changes that seemed unnecessary but then again…movies! Stay tuned for the next Movies to Books entry, I’m expecting it will be about Allegiant Part 1 from the Divergent series.
