Adventures In: Massachusetts

This post is a little delayed because it happened before we ever dreamt of taking on the 50 State Challenge. It's been a struggle to go through my photos and social media looking for any images or memories of this trip because its original purpose was a date trip to show Ros around my favorite spots around Boston. We had been already in town for the 4th of July, visiting my family back in 2019. To make the most of the quick weekend trip, I wanted to spend the second day in the city exploring.

We spent most of our day at the New England Aquarium, which if I'm being honest with you all, is totally better than the NYC Aquarium. Yes, you have Coney Island beach to make up for it, BUT, the New England Aquarium is so much bigger and very interactive with the animals like touch tanks and multiple feeding shows. Their exhibits were dazzling, including a tunnel tank, where you are able to walk beneath the fish and sharks as they swim over your head.

They also have a massive multi-story tank in the main area that you can follow a spiral path around it and have the opportunity to see inside of it from different angles. We saw all the colors in the world in that tank, swimming slow, swimming fast, in groups, and solo swimmers. It was mesmerizing and magical all at once. We saw jellyfish swimming in circular tanks, and penguins chasing each other underwater. Seals resting on rocks as they recover from their full bellies.

Ros had to avoid the eels because they reminded him too much of snakes (which he hates), but we got to see a really cool octopus hiding in a corner, most likely plotting its escape. Apparently, they are so smart they find the smallest holes and can escape without much effort, so they have to put extra effort into securing the tanks for these brilliant masterminds.

On the way out we got the chance to visit their touch tanks. They had one with small rays, and we were allowed to place our hands in the water and brush our fingers along their back as they swam by. They felt super rubbery and slippery, almost cool to the touch despite being underwater. It was really cool seeing them gliding in the water as birds do in the sky.

We got ourselves some souvenirs from the gift shop; Ros bought us a set of matching shark-themed necklaces. Of course, I wanted a stuffed animal but they were too expensive, as any stuffed animal is from a museum. At this point, we were so hungry, but we were in luck! A cousin of mine recommended a place not too far from the city that had what she claimed to be, THE BEST MILKSHAKES IN TOWN. How could we turn that offer down?

The little diner was called "The Breakfast Club", and it is located in Allston, MA. It was a small place, one of those diners you might see on Guy Fieri's shows. It felt like we were back in the 50's diner from the old films. We sat down and ate delicious meals, and ended with: milkshakes! We both got Chocolate, but mine was an Oreo cookie shake, and he chose a Nutella banana shake. They were not just delicious and the perfect thickness consistency, but they were huge! Barely finished them with the meal we had just consumed. I think we stayed there for a little extra time just to make sure we weren't going to drive and end up in a food coma.

We didn't want our day to end too soon, so we drove past Fenway Park. It wasn't the same passing outside the property, but you could still admit it was cool to see another stadium outside of the Yankees for once. We swore that once we had the chance, we would come back and see a Red Sox vs Yankees game at Fenway and get the full rivalry experience from the other side of the view.

Not bad for a day trip to Boston! Now that we live in MA, I can't wait to see what new adventures we go on!
