Food. Lots and lots of food! I've never seen so many different types of fruits and vegetables on display like this. The marketplace was buzzing with energy and movement. I could hear radios and live music coming from different directions. And the smells! Oh, such wonderful scents filled the air! Spices, and perfumes, sizzling meats, and aromas galore. I could spend eternity roaming these streets and never find the edge of this sea of treasures. One spot had a shelf with sacks filled with spices of every color. The most amazing thing was that they didn't have labels! People knew just by smelling them or tasting the powder and bought accordingly. I wish my pallet was so defined.
Following the flow of locals and tourists alike, I found a new realm within this world. Fabrics hung from rolls, shades in every color and combination. Textiles and quits, scarves, bags, and clothes. Some were rough against my fingertips, and other a luxurious silk, tickling my face as I rubbed my cheek against it. You could hear the sheers as they slice through fabrics like a hot knife on butter. It's almost artistic watching the merchants fold the fabrics into small squares easy for transport.
At this point, another scent has caught my attention: baked bread. The smell lingered in the air, like a lure as I followed it towards its source. I'm caught hopeless on the line, just as the fish once were that are now roasting on coals as I passed along the way. I passed a crowd of people who were shouting their orders to the cooks and I attempted to look at the commotion but the scent hooked in and I kept walking past the endless rows of stalls. At last, I found the bakery, and you could almost feel the heat come off the baked goods. The buttery scent hung in the air with the light splash of honey. I buy a round bread and waste no time breaking it in half between my hands. The fibers within it ripped deliciously and I bit into the warmth.
Each bite was heavenly, and it felt sinful when the last bit went down. The day was wonderful, and with the lowering sun, I knew tomorrow will bring more discoveries in the amazing marketplace. Maybe I'll check out the hand-crafted vases!
