Kieran Scott aka Kate Brian, is a YA author that has captured my attention for an interesting reason; we share titles. As you know my own work is called Shadow Lands. So imagine my surprise when I browsed through the library's YA shelves and came across this book. I couldn't hold back the impulse so I chose it for my reading challenge #24: A book based entirely on its cover.
Rory Miller is an average teen, quiet, keeps to herself, studious, and struggling to find her place in the world. She did her best to map out her life until a killer imposed his plans on her. She escaped narrowly, but will the next time he tries to make her his, have the same ending? Her family is forced to relocate, and as she attempts to restart her life, her past, and her thoughts, come back to haunt her. With pressures from her family and her new community, Rory begins to lose track of what is real, and what is just a terrible memory. Are the voices in her head? Or are they real, calling to her from the fog that surrounds the island?
The craft of this book was skillfully made and it enhanced my reading experience, causing it to be a true pleasure to read. Kate's mastery of switching between narrators, specifically between the victim and the killer, made the transitions feel effortless and unsettling. It forced me as a reader to connect with the killer, to understand and empathize with his mind and methods. This was something that almost felt unnatural to do. I loved the internal conflict as a reader.
There were characters throughout the story that reminded me of people I knew, which made the storyline so much more believable. Even in my television show choices, I love a good mystery and suspense storyline. If you love to read trippy stories, and takes that make you question reality, then this is the book for you. Suspense with clues, a mystery we didn't even know we were solving. Can't wait to read the next book in this series! 4.8 out of 5.
The book for next week is called: The Innocence Games, written by Michael Harvey. #10: Thriller or Mystery, stay tuned!
