#2 A classic romance: The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks
Ah the Notebook; one of the most well-known romance novels when talking to a girl. Personally, before this point, I have never read a Nicholas Sparks book, but I have seen a few of his films. They are all heartthrob tales of love overcoming all obstacles. I’d be a liar if I didn’t admit to crying a few times. What can I say? I’m human. With this novel being his first to be published, I can see clearly why this put him on the map, and made him a name synonymous with love stories.
The Notebook is a beautiful tale within a tale. It begins with an elderly man in a nursing home, reading a love story from an old notebook to an elderly woman who seems to be unaware of why she does her morning rituals. She listens to his story and he begins with a young man, named Noah, returning home after WWII. After his father passed away, he decided to restore the old family home. It’s been 14 years since he last saw the love of his life, Allie, and his love had never wavered. Allie appears back in town and seeks him out, their lives crossing once more, but time has passed, and she is on the eve of marriage.
When Allie discovers that her mother had kept all the letters Noah had sent to her while he was away, she realizes that her mother had led her to believe that Noah had forgotten about her. They realize their love is still a blaze, and it forces Allie to question whether to marry her fiancée or stay and give a chance to rekindle her love with Noah. When her fiancée comes after her, concerned when he can’t reach her, Allie is forced to choose between the two men that she loves.
This tale holds a beautiful twist that only adds to the love that is shared by all characters in this story. If you are looking for a book to bring you face to face with your inner feelings, then you must read this book about undying love. 4.8 out of 5 only because it forced me to face my inner girliness!
